If you're at all into guns or new tech you've probably heard about Defense Distributed, the guys in Austin that made a 3D printed AR15 lower receiver.
well things just took what could end up being a very large turn of events.
They've just received their FFL type 7 license.
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/03/3d-printed-gunmaker-now-has-federal-firearms-license-to-manufacture-deal-guns/
this allows them to manufacture and sell firearms.

Cody Wilson, director of Defense Distributed says that they will not begin selling until they also have their class 2 license, which allows the manufacture of NFA items.

This really has the possibility to change the entire dynamic of the gun debate.
if all you need is a 3d printer to make what is legally recognized as a gun, how does a government prevent that from being done?
and while currently most 3D printers that average people can afford are limited to printing in ABS and not the type that DD used to make the lower in this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAW72Y_XPF4
it's not going to be terribly long until 3d printers that can print in metal will be much more affordable. At that point you're not limited to just the lower receiver.
it is currently and always has been legal to manufacture your own weapons provided they do not fall into one of the NFA restricted categories, and will not be sold or given to anyone else.
I could make a gun in my garage right now, with no serial number and no registration and it's all legal as long as I don't give it to anyone else.
right now I'd have to have a mill to do it. but what if I could instead for the price of a small collection of metal working tools have a magic box in my garage that I could feed files and materials and check on once every few hours and get guns out of?
how do you control that? limit or restrict the materials that you feed to a 3d printer?
restricting plastic and metal? how likely to be possible does anyone think that'll be?

on a related note, Cody Wilson is quite possibly the first "Rational Anarchist" that I've ever seen. I'd recommend watching videos of his interviews if you want to see what I mean.

so I got "gifted" a computer that my parents recently replaced.
HDD is dying->dead.
was trying to figure out how to budget for a replacement drive, money is still tight and even with the monies/gift cards I was given it's still going to be tight.
"Oh wait" says I " I can pull one of the drives out of my old computer that doesn't get used because it's ancient and hardly runs anything."
"well Fuck" says I when I remember that the old computer is so old that it's got IDE drives, not SATA.

Anyone got any moderately sized Sata disks laying around that they don't need?

at least once I do manage to get it up and running I may be able to play some of the newer games that everyone has been talking about.

I was also given a couple laptops that are almost as ancient as the old computer that I was going to pull a disk out of.
they won't run anything either and one of them doesn't even have the power cable.

so maybe they become targets.

But I had catching up to do.
Just finished Ghost Story.
now I get to try to fall asleep quick enough that I can can get a small amount of sleep before moving heavy things tomorrow.
WHEEE

on a related note. Jim Butcher is a Bastard.

in an effort to have the feeling that I have some control over what's going on in my life I Made Kim help me rearrange the living room furniture.
we moved the TV/AV setup in front of the fireplace we have literally never used.
it took far longer than I had thought, mostly because neither one of us noticed that some of the couch bits have to go together a certain way for all the end bits to fit. Ikea couch, modular, and far too many ways to not put it together correctly.
this also allowed me to have a space to put a chair, something I've been missing for a while.
but the springs on the chair are a bit saggy, and the table I've got for my computer doesn't quite fit properly.
so I'm going to try to fix the chair, dunno what I can to about the table. maybe I can build a swing arm kind of arrangement.
we spent about 4 or 5 hours doing all this, so that we can fit more of the people we never invite over into the apartment.

next project is the office that still needs to be cleared out in order to turn it into a bedroom so that when one of us is unable to sleep due to being sick or whatever they can go to an actual bed instead of the couch.
but to do that we also have to move everything in what we call the library, since it's got all the bookcases and such, so basically over the next month it's a huge game of furniture rock-pile in the apartment

Went to Brookhaven yesterday to take tests so that I could sign up for classes.

took tests, the guy in the advising office that told me I could take all of them again without a fee because they were so old and the specific test that I took way back when isn't accepted anymore was surprised at how fast I completed them. ( I've always tested quickly.)

Turns out that since I've used a computer PC in the past 2 years I knew enough to not have to take their comp lit class. (thank the maker)
I passed the reading comprehension test with great marks and the essay I got a 7... out of 8 so apparently I can BS a computer into thinking I can write.

Unfortunately since it's been so long since I've done algebra I get to take some dev classes before I can start on the credit classes.
I also get to take some BS how to be a student class... wtf?

Got signed up for the bs student class and a dev math, $500, hope the Financial aid can get worked out...
and the book for the math class? gonna run $200, and that's if I only Rent the damn thing.

ouch

It's been about 3 weeks now, My shoulder still hurts, and now it's spreading to the other side of my neck.
can anyone recommend a chiropractor/massage therapist that won't hound me about continuing to come see him after my issue is fixed?
preferably one that take BCBS insurance?

This stuff is reusable, can be recast again and again, and has a melt point of 140, so it's temp stable.
also will apparently hold open a wound channel instead of letting it collapse back in on itself.

might have to see about getting some for a future shoot.

If you get a ticket, or maybe several tickets, and pay them off.
it's the same as pleading guilty.
nolo contendere is also guilty for the purposes of this shit btw.
once you've been declared guilty Texas will asses a surcharge on you.
and while you have surcharges outstanding you will be unable to renew your license.
and even after you pay off the fines for paying the tickets that you got.
you'll have to pay a reinstatement fee for the fact that you paid off the fines for the tickets you paid.

so YOU HAVE TO PAY A TAX FOR PAYING A TAX FOR PAYING THE TAX.

Shit like this is why I'm 100% opposed to police being used as revenue generators.
they need to be stopping and preventing actual crimes. not bugging me for going slightly faster than some random guy decided is safe, at night on an empty road.

used to be paying the ticket was enough, then the insurance company would rake you a bit for getting a ticket.
now it's the ticket, the surcharge, the reinstatement fee and the insurance rates going up. and god help you if you're required to carry an SR22...

I've driven for many years without a license. not having a piece of pretty plastic didn't wipe the ability from my brain. but all this bullshit to actually be "legally" driving again? I want to go back and kill the asshat that decided that it was required to have a license for any-damn-thing.

I'd have sent this directly to him, but I've not been able to determine A> if he has a DW account, and B> if A=true, What it is.
so here's this.

I still say that adding all that weight to the front of the gun is less than optimal.
